Information for Placement into the Gifted ProgramLast Changed
2009-08-14

  • Students who are new to Grayson High School and participated in a gifted program at their former school, need to contact the gifted program contact teacher (Mrs. Cristy Edwards) as to their placement in the Gifted Program.
  • Georgia does not reciprocate gifted placement with other states; however, a student who is active in the gifted program in another Georgia public school, has qualified through the multiple criteria, and has the qualifying scores in their records may be quickly placed in the gifted program by the gifted program contact teacher.  However, placement is not automatic; records from the previous school must be obtained.
  • Georgia uses multiple criteria to determine eligiblilty.  Students must qualify in three of the following four areas in assessments that are less than two years old.  Good grades alone do not qualify a child for the gifted program.
  • Georgia Criteria is as follows:
Mental abilities    > 96%ile on a nationally normed test
Achievement       > 90%ile on a nationally normed test
Creativity            >  90%ile on a nationally normed assessment or test
Motivation          > 90%ile  on a nationally normed assessment or 3.68 GPA

(92%) over a two-year period (latest two years)

What is Independent Directed Study?Last Changed
2008-08-02

Independent Directed Study (DS) allows students the opportunity to study in depth an area of interest.  A gifted certified teacher will facilitate the program.  This program requires students to design a plan stating the subject of study, list their objectives, plan activities to achieve their goals, and complete a final project.  This program requires the student to be self-motivated.
Past Grayson students have done indepth study in law, history, mathematics, art, Italian, Japanese language and history, game theory and gaming, astronomy, movement science, epidemics and pandemics, comparative religions, and much more.

So many students were interested in Independent Study forensics that Grayson began to offer a science course in forensics!

What is the Gifted Program ?Last Changed

The Gifted Program at Grayson High School is composed of over 600 students (15%).  Gifted-certified instructors teach in every academic subject.  Gifted program students are registered for gifted courses by teacher recommendation and grades from the previous year according to students' areas of strengths.  Gifted classes have a maximum of 21* students.  Gifted courses are not "harder" than honors classes; they are different because they take into account the special needs of gifted students and their learning styles.       (* GCPS IE2 waiver allows larger classes).

GHS strongly recommends all students take the highest level available.  Gifted students are urged to take Gifted and AP classes whenever possible.

In addition to gifted classes in math, science, language arts, social studies, and foreign language, eleventh and twelfth graders may elect to take Independent Directed Study.  In this course,  students create a contract and develop products in an area of personal interest.  Eleventh and twelfth graders may complete an Internship with a mentor in a field that is related to a career path.  Both choices are taken for a full semester and may count for a content area elective credit. Students may take up Internship and Independent Study up to 4 times each.

In order to take these electives, students must be academically in good standing and complete the application process.
