Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) can happen to anyone at anytime. Athletes at all levels, from high school to professional, die each year from SCD. SCD is thought to affect 1 in 500 persons of all ages but usually manifests itself before the age of 20. It often strikes with no prior warnings or symptoms in otherwise healthy young adults. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the leading cause of SCD in teenagers. Unbelievably, HCM is 100% detectable.
The Archer HS PTSA in partnership with “Heart Screens for Teens” is excited to offer screening for HCM at a much reduced price. The screening is accomplished with ultrasound technology. The echocardiogram exam is simple, safe, requires no preparation and only takes about 10 minutes. The normal cost for this test can range from $900-$1500. “Heart Screens for Teens” is able to provide this service for $65.
Below is key information for the screenings:
Date: March 10, 2012
Location: Archer High School
Cost: $65 payable by cash or check (payable to Heart Screens for Teens)
Students under 18 need a consent form. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact Mary Jackson at 678.458.5502 or e-mail her at mj5times@aol.com.
